Why do I ache so much today?

Updated: Oct 15

We all get that familiar sensation at this time of year, more aches and pains, getting up is a chore, aching joints and muscles. but It’s a fact that we'll ache more in autumn and there are several scientific and environmental factors behind this.

.

Cold Weather Tightens Muscles and Joints

When the temperature drops, the body works harder to retain heat by narrowing blood vessels to conserve warmth. This results in less blood flow to muscles and joints, making them stiffer and less flexible. The colder the environment, the tighter our muscles become, which can lead to tension and discomfort, even more so for those with arthritis or other joint issues.

Lower Pressure

When autumn brings storms and colder fronts, the drop in pressure causes tissues in the body to expand slightly, including those around our joints. This pressure can lead to discomfort. How many of us say that we can "feel" the weather changing in my bones. Science shows there's truth in that.

Reduced Physical Activity

As the weather cools, we spend more time indoors, so we're less physical activity.. Without regular movement, muscles and joints stiffen and are less lubricated. Lack of movement for an length of time increases our aches and pains, so stiffness is more noticeable during autumn compared to the more active summer months.

Humidity and Dampness

Autumn brings an increase in humidity and damp weather, which can aggravate our aches and pains. Dampness can make joints feel swollen and painful, further contributing to discomfort during this season.

So, what can we do?

To combat the increased stiffness and discomfort associated with autumn, a highly recommended treatment is a Hot Stone Massage. This therapeutic massage uses heated, smooth stones place on key points of the body to relax the tightened muscles, improve circulation, and ease joint stiffness. The warmth from the stones penetrates deep into the muscles, increasing the blood flow restricted by the cold weather, to help relieve pain caused by tension.

Hot stone massages can be particularly beneficial for those experiencing autumn-related aches because it directly counteracts the cooling effects of the weather. The heat helps loosen stiff muscles and joints, while the massage itself reduces inflammation and improves our flexibility.

So, while Autumn brings beautiful scenery and cooler weather, it also brings more muscle and joint aches from the lower temperatures, pressure. Treatments like hot stone massage provides soothing relief, making autumn more comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable.

Pavo Spa offers a hot stone massage (with a 30% discount on Wednesdays and Thursdays), give it a try to fix those aches and pains.
